Liesl Stoltz studied the flute since 1989 with Eva Tamassy at the University of
Stellenbosch. In 1993, at the age of 16, she won a scholarship to attend an orchestra
course in the USA where she was selected principal flute of the International Youth
Wind Orchestra and received a special award for excellence in performance and leadership.
In 1995, after master classes in Johannesburg, Shigenori Kudo offered her a scholarship
to study with him at the Ecole Normale de Musique: Alfred Cortot in Paris. She also
studied with Pierre-Yves Artaud at the same institution. She holds a Diplôme Supérieur
de Concertiste in Chamber Music and a Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste in Flute
(both obtained with distinction).

In 1999 she obtained a B. Mus. Hons. (First Class) from the University of Cape Town
and in 2000 a Performer’s Licentiate (with distinction) from the University of South
Africa. Liesl studied with Peter-Lukas Graf from 1999 to 2001 at the ‘Academia Internazionale
Superiore di Musica: Lorenzo Perosi’ in Biella, Italy and obtained the Superior
Diploma in Virtuosity with distinction in November 2001. She had master classes
with Jean-Pierre Rampal, William Bennett, Jean Ferrandes, Maxence Larrieux and Trevor
Wye. In June 2003 she obtained the degree M. Mus. with distinction from the University
of Cape Town.

Since 1993 she has won various bursaries and competitions, including the National
Youth Music (Woodwinds), the French Huguenot, the ATKV-FORTE (in ’97 as Winner,
Woodwinds and in ’99 as Overall Winner), the Oude Meester Music Prize, the Concours
European de Musique. She received second prize in the SAMRO Music Prize competition
(2000) and in the ‘Jeunesses Musicales International’ in Bucharest; she was a semi-finalist
in the Budapest International flute competition (2003) and a finalist in the International
Flute Competition in Italy (2005). Liesl has been principal flute in the National
Youth Orchestra in South Africa and has performed as soloist with the Cape Town-
and Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestras and the UCT String Ensemble. She has also
been heard on SABC, SAfm, Fine Music Radio, Radio France and Romanian Radio.

Liesl formed a duo with Portuguese classical guitarist Pedro Rodrigues in 2000 and
they have since performed extensively in France, Italy and South Africa. In May
2001 the duo received second prize in the “Gaetano Zinetti” International Chamber
Music Competition in Verona, Italy and also the “Morelati Award for Excellence”
as youngest group who participated in the final round of the competition. The duo
recorded a CD in 2004 which was nominated for the GMT as well as SAMA awards in
South Africa in 2005.

At present Liesl lives in Bellville and teaches privately and at the University
of Cape Town. She performs extensively as soloist and chamber musician. She also
formed a duo with Spanish pianist, Jorge Herranz in 2005 and they had concerts in
Paris in April and a short tour in South Africa in August 2005. In April 2006 the
duo will perform at the KKNK.
