Nicola van Zyl Smit first started playing recorder at the age of 5. She studied
recorder performance with Karin Maritz at the University of Stellenbosch, also regularly
receiving tuition from Stefan Temmingh. In 2003, she obtained her performers licentiate
from the University of South Africa with distinction and was invited to perform
for the Unisa Overseas Scholarship competition. She achieved the degrees of BMus
and BMus (Hons) from the University of Stellenbosch with distinction. In 2005, she
was awarded a bursary from the National Arts Council for overseas study.

Nicola was a founder member and leader of Hout Recorder Quartet, which released
its CD in 2005. Now regularly broadcast, the quartet has achieved favourable reviews
from critics in South Africa.

Since 2005, Nicola has lived in London. She holds an MMus in recorder performance
from the Royal College of Music where she studied with Ashley Solomon and Julien
Feltrin. She has performed at several venues in and around London including St George’s
Hanover Square, St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, the Handel House Museum and the Cobbe
Collection, as a soloist and chamber musician. Currently, Nicola freelances as a
performer and teaches recorder at several London schools.
