Piet de Beer was born in Wellington and obtained his Performance Diploma at the
University of Stellenbosch. He obtained his Teachers Licentiate through UNISA whereafter
he accepted a teaching post at the Hugo Lamprechts Music Centre.

After two years he was granted a scholarship by the Royal school of Music to do
his M.Mus. degree at the Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Whilst Piet was in
the United Kingdom he performed a variety of solo performances and acted on occasion
as Concert master for the Academy orchestra. After finishing his studies in July
1999 Piet returned to South Africa, and soon thereafter began freelancing for the
1st violin section of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. In 2000 Piet continued freelancing
for the Cape Town Simfonietta.

In January 2001 Piet secured his position in the 1st violin section for the new
Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Between 2002 and 2004, Piet continued to play for the
Cape Philharmonic during which time he changed his position from 1st violin section
to principal of the second violin section. During this time Piet was also a member
of the Crowson Quartet and held a teaching position at the Beau Soleil Music School.

In November 2004 Piet resigned from the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then
he has been an active chamber and session musician. He currently freelances for
the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the KwaZulu-Natal
Orchestra. Piet has recently worked and recorded music with artists such as David
Kramer, Arno Carstens and Schalk Joubert. Piet currently plays for the newly established
Camerata Tinta Barocca.
